Listen to George Owusu's explanation.

Ghanaians may have to wait longer than expected to see the announced oil find piped out of the West Cape Three points.

Officials of Kosmos Energy, part of the consortium that announced the find two months ago, say they are having difficulties procuring equipment that will allow further drilling of wells for possible production.

The company says it has encountered the difficulty due to the current high international demand for drilling equipment.

In June this year, Kosmos energy with its partners announced the discovery of oil in significant quantities at the West Cape Three points of Ghana’s Western Region, 40 miles deep into the sea, with very high expectations of production.

But two months on, the company says it is still drilling more holes with a projection to drill three to four more by December.

Mr. George Owusu, the country representative of Kosmos, told Joy News that depending on the availability of equipment, usually it should take between three and five years to flow the oil.

However, with the soaring global oil prices, virtually everyone is drilling oil in their backyard and this has made it difficult for the consortium to procure the needed equipment, insisting that funds for the procurement is not the problem.

“Normally, sometimes it takes three, four, five years, depending upon the availability of equipment, and you know since the price of oil went up, almost everybody is drilling oil now because with 50-75 dollars barrel of oil, almost everybody…there is a big demand for oil equipment and that is why I cannot tell you when; it’s all the availability of the equipment, money is not the issue, but the equipment is the problem."
