The National Telecommunications provider, Ghana Telecom (GT) is halting the construction of additional pay phone booths in the country due to poor patronage of the facility.

Officials at the GT say the construction of more phone booths has proven to be less profitable. GT would instead transfer existing phone booths to schools, hospitals and churches where the use of mobile telephones is restricted.

Patronage of public pay phones in the country has been on the decline since the proliferation of mobile phones.

Speaking to Luv News in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Customer Care Manager of the company, Mr Adu Danso said the maintenance of the pay phones had been high even though the service brings the least revenue to the company.

The company also intends to roll out new products including public internet cafés around the country.
