The Ghana Book Publishers Association has presented books worth ¢60 million to the Osu Children's Home in Accra to promote reading and enhance education for inmates.

The books, comprising readers and textbooks were drawn from all the 22 local publishers of the association.

Mr Elliot Agyare, President of Association, who presented the items to the children, said the donation was in response to a request made by the Home.

"We saw this as a step in the right direction to help our children who are deprived and lack basic things in life," he said.

Mr Agyare called on the government, especially the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and the Ghana Education Service to patronise books from the association to enable their industry to grow.

He urged the children to adopt the habit of reading in order to be educated to enable them to cope with the storm the future held for them.

Mrs Helena Obeng Asamoah, Manageress of the Osu children's Home, thanked the association and pledged that the books would be used to educate the children.

She said families had refused to take back children while the adoption process took a long time thus making children overstay with attendant problems.

Mrs Asamoah therefore called on all NGOs, philanthropists, churches, individuals and organisations to come to aid of the home.
