Benjamin Akyena Brentuo, the University of Ghana student who was arrested by the police in connection with threats on the lives of some lecturers, was on Friday granted bail after three weeks in detention.

He is standing trial for issuing death threats on the lives of some lecturers of the university, including the Vice Chancellor, over the new residential policy that gives campus accommodation to only first year students.

The police had raided the room of the accused, took away a personal computer, some documents and a pen drive, which they claim contained incriminating evidence.

Arguing for bail, Mr. Brantuo’s lawyer, Biadela Mortey, told the court that his client has been punished enough after he missed the final end of semester examination due to his detention.

He said his client cooperated fully with the police ever since his arrest and therefore needed to be granted bail.

The prosecution did not object to the request for bail.

The bail was granted after the prosecution withdrew all initial charges and preferred new ones with five counts of threat of death against the student.

Brentuo pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The trial witnessed a heavy police presence while scores of students from the University who attended the trial to support their colleague chanted various songs after Brantuo was granted bail.
