Professor Francis Allotey, a Mathematician has urged teachers to focus on developing the creative talent of students to enable them to come out with discoveries that would benefit the country.

He said the educational system often dampened the innovative spirit of children by concentrating on the use of their left side of the brain, instead of the right side, which thinks creatively.

Prof. Allotey made the call at the closing ceremony of the "National Science Fair 2007" organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports, to encourage scientific discovery especially among students.

He said, he was happy to see such creativity among students, who were talented enough to initiate projects that used solar energy and other alternative energy source at a time when the country was facing crisis in energy.

On exhibition were solar cookers, biogas machine, cement manufactured with dry cocoa pods and bricks manufactured by plastic waste.

Mrs. Elizabeth Amoako-Enimil, Deputy Director for the Secondary Education Division of the Ghana Education Service also pledged government's support to boost teaching and learning of science in the Educational Reform Programme.

She advised students to develop interest in the subjects and advised them to learn hard to come out with more discoveries.

Mrs. Kate Aidoo, Chief Judge for the event said the projects presented at the exhibition were impressive and therefore needed further support to develop them.

An automatic appliance guard developed by Mr Samuel Otu, a student of Asuansi Technical Institute, Central Region was adjudged the best for the Technical/Teacher Training Division.

An automatic bore-hole system initiated by a student of Mfantsipim Secondary School, Master Francis Atindobila was also selected as the best in the secondary school category.

A solar cooker developed by Samuel Arthur, a pupil of Twedaase JSS, Tema was the best for the JSS, whereas a detective security alert system manufactured by Hawle Iddrisu, Kwabenya Atomic D/A School, Greater Accra also took the lead in the Primary School division.
