The Awutu-Effutu-Senya District Assembly has expressed concern about the poor performance of school children in the area in the 2007 Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Consequently, the assembly has tasked the District Education Oversight Committee to meet in January next year to initiate measures to assist the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service to improve the performance of schools in examinations.

Mr. Solomon Abbam Quaye, the District Chief Executive, said this at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly at Winneba.

He said none of candidates from the four basic schools in the district obtained between aggregates 6 and 31 to qualify for admission into senior high school though the district placed second out of 13 schools in the Central Region.

Mr. Abbam Quaye said the district presented 4,583 candidates, made up of 2,432 boys and 2,151 girls from 119 public and private schools.

He said 70 had aggregate 5, 608 scored between aggregates 7 and 15, 2,175 had between aggregate 16 and 30 and 1,667 had aggregates 31 and above.

Mr Quaye said in all a total of 2853 children, passed the examination while 1,667, failed, adding that four schools whose names were not mention scored zero percent.

Mr. Abbam Quaye said the District Director of Education, Mr. Kweku Arhin had completed working visits to all the schools to help strategise for better performance.

He said the District Directorate of Education in conjunction with a donor institution organised a workshop on how to improve education for traditional rulers in the district.
