Dr Stephen Adei, Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), last Thursday completed his defence before an Accra Fast Track High Court, submitting a letter dated the 1st of July, 2001 from the Africa Leadership and Management Academy (ALMA) as the basis of his appointment as an Adjunct Professor.
Led in defence by his Counsel, Stanley Amarteifio, Dr. Stephen Adei told the Court that he was appointed Adjunct Professor at ALMA by way of the said letter.
The said letter states that Dr. Adei was appointed to the position of Adjunct Professor of ALMA to teach a module (course) titled “Balancing Personal Relational and Public Life in Leadership Programme”.
The letter said the course ran from the 13th day of October, to the 20th day of October, 2001, stating that “we appreciate your help in teaching this important module for the first time”.
Upon cross examination by James Agalga Esq.; Counsel for Mr. Egbert Faibille Jnr, Plaintiff in the matter, as to how a specific and so-called appointment to be an Adjunct Professor at ALMA for the period of 13th-20th October, 2001 can be transformed into an appointment as an Adjunct Professor since 2001, Dr. Adei claimed that since that appointment letter he has been teaching that course at ALMA once every year and that he is even scheduled to go to ALMA to teach that course in August, 2008.
Asked by Mr. Agalga if there was any position known as Adjunct Professor at GIMPA, Dr. Adei replied that there is no position known as Adjunct Professor at GIMPA and that it is now that GIMPA is taking steps to appoint Adjunct Professors.
He said professorships are of many types and kinds and that there can even be professorships in marriage counselling.
Asked by Mr. Agalga as to what kind of professor he is, Dr. Adei said “In America, every body who teaches in a university is referred to as a professor.”
Asked by Mr. Agalga if every lecturer at GIMPA is referred to as a professor, Dr. Adei replied in the negative.
Asked by Mr. Agalga to explain to the Court as to what the description of GIMPA is as a so-called ‘Centre of Excellence,’ Dr. Adei said at GIMPA “we strive to be excellent in everything that we do though we make mistakes”.
