No Time to Die, King Ampaw’s newest movie was thrust into the international limelight last month when David Dontoh who plays the lead role in the movie was adjourned the Best Actor at the 4th African Film Festival of Tarifa in Spain.
Fourteen feature films from Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, Chad, Gabon, Guinea, Mauritius, Mozambique, Burkina Faso and Tunisia were in competition at the Tarifa festival which is steadily becoming a major hub for African films in Europe. Documentaries, short features and animation were also shown at the festival.
No Time to Die was shot on location in Ghana last year. It is a comedy about love. Dontoh plays the role of Asante, a hearse driver who finds it hard winning a woman because of the nature of his work.
His luck, however shines when a young woman, Esi, hires him to convey her mother’s corpse to the village. They fall in love but Esi’s father becomes a stumbling block to their romance. The ensuing drama affords Dontoh the opportunity to unfurl his acting prowess which impressed the 10 member jury at the Tarifa festival.
King Ampaw, who was in Tarifa for the festival said the jury felt Dontoh was able to vividly depict the character of the hearse driver and that made everyone at the festival anxious to watch No Time To Die.
“It was great shooting another film with King Ampaw 23 years after he directed me in the first feature film I acted in. that was Kukurantumi-Road to Accra. I loved the social issues raised in No time to die and I tried hard to make the character I play come across well. The award from Spain means I succeeded at what I set out to do,” said Dontoh.
King Ampaw said that the prize will be formally presented to Dontoh at a gala in Accra next month during which Ghanaians will have the opportunity to view the 90 minute work.
Other actors in the film include Agatha Ofori, Kofi Bucknor, Emmanuel France, Fritz Baffour, Oma Hunter, Amartey Hedjoleh and Agnes Dapaah.
No time to die has already been screened at festivals in France, Canada and Germany.
It will show in China by the end of this month and in Atlanta and United States on July 21.
