A pressure group, the Concerned Citizens Association of Tamale is asking government to close down the Tamale Teaching Hospital immediately before it collapses and claim lives.

The association said it had resolved to embark on demonstrations by the end of March to press for the building of a new hospital.

Alhassan Bashiru, President of the association told a press conference at Tamale that most of the structures at the hospital were on the verge of collapse because they had not undergone any major repairs since the hospital was built over 33 years ago.

He said that the poor state of the structures had compelled authorities of the hospital to close down the third and fourth floors of the tower block.

The hospital which was supposed to be a teaching hospital had no running water, its theater and X-ray units were not functioning effectively and its only standby generator had broken down.

Mr Daballi complained that domestic animals often invaded the hospital premises competing with patients and workers for space, a situation which he attributed to the lack of security fence wall around the hospital.

Mr Daballi said that the situation was a disincentive for the health workers most of who refused posting to the hospital due to inadequate equipment and accommodation.
