The Minister of Health, Major Courage Quashigah has commissioned three new electric generators worth over 764,000 pounds for the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to increase its power supply system.

The provision of generators, with a capacity of 1,250KVA, supplied by G&J Technical Services Limited was to enable the hospital enjoy uninterrupted power to all departments when there was power outage from the national grid.

Major Quashigah said about 60 per cent of district hospitals and urban health centres had already been equipped with 60-100KVA electric generating sets, whiles 90 per cent of regional hospitals had been provided with 400-800KVA generators.

He stated that the power policy of the Ministry of Health was that all health facilities be equipped with the appropriate power back up systems to ensure quality and uninterrupted health care delivery at the country’s various hospitals.

“These generators would supply power so that life support interventions are not interrupted," he said. He added that the type of power back-up system provided is dependent on the level of health care delivery.

The electric generators were to replace the broken old 1200KVA generator that was commissioned 20 years ago.

Major Quashigah said government was to conclude arrangement on the acquisition of three 800KVA Generators set for Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and a similar generator for the Tamale hospital.

Major Quashigah tasked the hospital management to prepare a special planned maintenance schedule to enable the hospital maximize the use of the machines.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital said with the installation of the generators, the hospital would no more experience any power outages that had confronted it for sometime now.

"From today we will not have power problems again thanks to the Ministry of Health", he said.
