The Ejisu-Juaben District recorded 156 reported cases of HIV/AIDS in 2006 as against 181 in 2005, Miss Eunice Korankye, District Focal Person for the pandemic, has disclosed.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Ejisu on Thursday, she attributed the drop to intensive education and anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns embarked on by the various Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) as well as Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the District.

She stated that from 1999 to 2006 the district recorded a total of 1,074 cases and gave the breakdown as 63 in 1999, 168 in 2000, 107 in 2001 and 96 in 2002, adding that 129 cases were recorded in 2003 and 174 in 2004.

Miss Korankye commended the CBOs and NGOs for their commitment to duty and called on them to step up their efforts to minimize the prevalence rate of the pandemic in the district.

She entreated residents to desist from engaging in sexual promiscuity for the improvement of their health and also appealed to the Ghana AIDS Commission to increase funds allocated to anti-HIV/AIDS campaigners to boost their work.

The District Focal Person for the pandemic urged the residents to embrace the Voluntary, Counselling and Testing (VCT) exercise to help them know their health status.
