History

JOY FM is a part of the Multimedia Broadcasting Company (MBC). MBC received its Certificate of Incorporation on 20th February 1995 and Certificate to Commence Business on 27th February 1995. The MBC group, which is now made up of the JOY FM, LUV FM, ADOM FM and JOYONLINE platforms started with just JOY FM.

JOY FM, lacking a mast, started transmission from a GBC mast at 'Adjankote'. Test transmission started in February with the first ever JOY FM DJ's who were Cox Tamakloe, Mark Okrakue-Mantey and Eric DeGraft Aikins. These three individuals played music on the station 24hours a day, very often sleeping in the transmitter room where there was no furniture. Unfortunately, after a few days, the station had to cut 24hour transmission to 18hours because the GBC technicians insisted that they must shut down for 6 hours each day.

The Administrative Centre of the station was located at 355 Faanofa Rd, Kokomlemle. JOY FM started with staff strength of FIVE. Other presenters who soon joined were: Gabby Adjetey, Dusty Wayne, Tommy Annan-Forson and Kofi Tsakpornu.

The studio was moved to Kokomlemle on 6th March 1995 which is when the station started 24hr service. With the full day service came the programmes that we now know and love so well … The Super Morning Show, The Cosmopolitan Mix, Lunch Time Rhythms. Drive Time, The Multitrack Show, Joy Slow Jam and Continuous Jams (i.e. the over night program). Cox Tamakloe named most of these programmes. The first ever presenters for the various programmes were:
The Super Morning Show - Tommy Annan-Forson
The Cosmopolitan Mix - Dusty Wayne
Lunch Time Rhythms - Kofi Tsakpornu
Drive Time - Gabby Adjetey
The Multitrack Show - Cox Tamakloe
Joy Slow Jam - Cox Tamakloe & Mark Okrakue-Mantey
Continuous Jams - Eric DeGraft Aikins

Another regular favourite of the JOY family of programmes is Front Page, a weekly current affairs talk programme that has been hosted from inception by Kweku Sakyi-Addo. The Front Page was first aired on 4th July 1995.
