President Kufuor says the year 2006 was a good year for Ghana.

In his New Year address to the nation on Sunday evening, President Kufuor said in spite of the many challenges that faced the country, successes particularly in the areas of democracy and governance made 2006 a fruitful one.

He said drug trafficking was a major setback in the year under review and also mentioned the power crisis and the agitations on the labour front as other major challenges.

President Kufuor however said the nation’s resilient economy ensured that the challenges did not impact too negatively on the people.

Launching the Ghana@50 Golden Jubilee celebrations which kick off in the New Year, President Kufuor said 2007 offers a unique opportunity for Ghanaians to demonstrate unity and also highlight the many opportunities for commerce, business and tourism.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to usher in the New Year as people who have faith in God.

President Kufuor also charged the youth to seize opportunities that come their way to prepare themselves for the future and added that the government was committed to pursuing policies that would empower the citizenry in the year 2007.
