The Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice says the removal of the marital rape clause from the Domestic Violence Act constitutes an injustice to women.

Acting CHRAJ Commissioner Ms Anna Bossman said the Domestic Violence Act, awaiting presidential assent left perpetrators of violence against women and girls unpunished.

CHRAJ has been speaking on the recently passed bill as its contribution to global debate on women's advancement, since the Beijing Conference in 1995.

A variety of activities were held across Accra on Thursday to recognize women as part of the global celebrations of International Women's Day on the theme "Ending impunity for violence against women and girls.”

The international day is set aside to celebrate achievements in women's rights and also to protest injustice and violence against women and girls.

Ms Bossman told journalists that whiles CHRAJ believed the Domestic Violence Law was a positive step in protecting victims of domestic abuse, the removal of the rape clause that sought to criminalize marital rape exempted the perpetrators from punishment.

She said after 50 years of existence, the state needed to ensure justice for women.

The Commission congratulated Ghanaian women including farmers, market women, and mothers for their resourcefulness and courage in contributing to national development.

There were presentations from different women's groups on Women as Victims of Violence and Torture.

In her presentation on the role of Advocacy groups, a member of the Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment, Adjoa Bame urged the media to stop portraying women as sex objects.

CHRAJ says it will re-strategize with women's groups to educate the public and halt the erroneous propaganda that the domestic violence act was intended to break up families.
