The Minister of Defence, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor, has advised military personnel to comport themselves in order to cement the hard-won cordial relationship with civil society.

He gave the advice at a durbar with officers and men of Two Garrison at the Takoradi Airforce Station on Monday.

Dr Addo-Kufuor said nothing should be done by the military to destroy its relationship with the civil society fostered especially by the New Patriotic Party government.

He expressed concern that indiscipline was slowly gaining ground in the armed forces and some military personnel were exhibiting unprofessional conduct at the expense of the reputation of the armed forces.

He referred to a recent clash of the military with students of Takoradi Polytechnic saying investigations into the incident has been completed and he has directed Service Commanders to prevent such incidents.

Dr Addo-Kufuor urged the military to exhibit high professional conduct to prevent the Armed Forces from retrogressing into the bad days when some of them took the law into their hands.

He said the government recognizes and appreciates the role that units of the garrison had played in maintaining law and order in Ghana and in the sub-region in general.

Dr Addo-Kufuor said the people also appreciate the support officers and men and women of the garrison had given to the Forestry Department, Police and the Western Regional Security Council (REGSEC) in maintaining peace in Sekondi-Takoradi, Elubo, Dadieso, Sefwi Wiawso, Tarkwa and surrounding areas.

He said the government and the people of the country expected security agencies particularly, the armed forces, to maintain a politically neutral posture while at the same time taking measures to protect the constitution and maintain peace and security.
