Farmer held over fake currency

The Sunyani Municipal Police have arrested a 45 year old farmer at Dormaa Akontanim in the Brong Ahafo Region, Kofi Fofie for allegedly dealing in fake 20,000 cedis notes.

Fofie and his accomplices, now at large are alleged to have cut papers, arranged them in bundles and covered each side with genuine 20,000 cedis notes to dupe people.

The Sunyani Municipal police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno who briefed journalists explained that the suspects after carefully arranging the fake notes and putting the genuine 20,000 cedis notes at each side of the bundle approached interested persons to buy them at reduced rates.

Mr Yohuno indicated that on May 26, 2007, the police had information at about 3:00 pm that a group of young men dealing in fake currency notes around the Zino Guest House area.

He said the police quickly moved there but two of the suspects managed to escape leaving behind a bag in which they had arranged the fake notes. But Fofie was arrested.

In another development, the Sunyani Municipal Police Commander said the police had arrested three persons- Sanni Abu 22, a coconut seller; Emmanuel Opoku Mensah, 18, a student and Issah Alhassan, 20, a scrap dealer for allegedly stealing telephone cables belonging to the Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited.

He said on May 30, 2007, a worker of Ghana Telecom, Yaw Manu was awakened by an unusual noise at Penkwase, a suburb of Sunyani, at about 3:00 am and when he looked around, he spotted some young men attempting to steal telephone cables. He said the suspects managed to escape.

According to CSOP Yohuno, the GT worker then decided to mount guard in the area because he suspected that the thieves would come back at about 5:00 am.

He said when they did return, Mr Manu raised an alarm, which attracted people in the neighborhood, but two of the thieves managed to run away, leaving Mensah who was arrested and handed over to the police.
