Four persons suspected of breaking into shops in Koforidua and stealing large quantities of goods were on Wednesday arrested by the police.

The four, aged between 25 and 30, whose names are being withheld by the police were arrested at dawn at the Koforidua Jackson's Park upon a tip-off.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Naami, Koforidua Municipal Police Commander, told newsmen that for sometime now the police had received complaints from shop owners in the municipality about break-ins into their shops at night by unknown persons to steal goods.

He said on Tuesday night he received a call from an informant who had spotted some persons hiding items suspected to be stolen behind the dais at the Jackson's Park.

DSP Naami said he organized his men to lay ambush at the area and within moments the informant had identified one of the suspects by his clothes leading to their arrest with the booty made up of large quantities of footwear for both sexes, shirts, ladies dresses and slippers.

He said most of the dresses were in hangers, indicating that they had been hanged in the shops when the suspects broke in.

At the time of filling the report, large numbers of traders had besieged the police station to report of break-ins into their shops.

Some of the traders who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said for the past two weeks, they had experienced break-ins into their shops and goods worth millions of cedis had been stolen.

DSP Naami said the complainants would be screened and made to identify their goods.
