The Ghana Police Service has said it is premature for anybody to describe the recent gangster style murders as contract killings.
Addressing a news conference at the Police Headquarters in Accra to respond to public concerns about the killings, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Dr. K.K. Manfo said despite the feeling of insecurity in the country the police are on top of their job.
He said ongoing police investigations would determine if the killings were done for money.
“It is too early to conclude. Until we are able to arrest the suspects and those involved…and the good news is that in terms of the death of Mr Rokko Frimpong we have arrested the key suspect…We have strong team on the ground and we have set a crime team of homicide experts to go there (Tema),” he said.
Dr Manfo said the police take reports of threat of deaths seriously and would take action.
“The number of people who came to us and we found out that their cases were genuine, undercover we have provided security. So if people genuinely have cases of threats of death they should let us know. We can’t promise that we would give security to everybody because the danger is that there would be a forge of reports but if there is a genuine case of threat of death, why not we are prepared.”
As part of measures to abate crime in society, Dr Manfo said there would be more snap checks and swoops on suspected criminal hide outs and intensified patrols to deal with the growing insecurity among the public.
A committee made up of topnotch detectives has also been tasked to look into old unresolved murders.
The National Security Minister, Mr Francis Poku assured that all the security agencies are collaborating to ensure public safety.
