An Assistant Director of Education, Mr Solomon Djaba-Mensah, has called on parents to inculcate good family values in their children.

He explained that the family constituted a unit of society and said if the country had many hardworking, disciplined and moral upright families, there was the likelihood of progress and development in the country.

Mr Djaba-Mensah appealed to parents not to leave the education and training of their children in the hands of teachers alone.

He was speaking at the 15th Speech and Prize-Giving Day of the Madonna School at Koforidua at the weekend on the theme, "Refining Ghanaian values".

Mr Djaba-Mensah observed that the cohesion of the country was under the threat of indiscipline at all levels and violence in resolving social differences.

The headmistress, Sister Piu Lilia, said the school had been topping the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Eastern Region since its inception in 1991.

She said this year, one of the students of the school, Miss Akua Afosu Boateng, topped the reading competition in Eastern Region and represented the region at the national level.

The chairman for the function, Mr Isaac Apau-Gyasi, called on parents to encourage their children to take their studies in information technology seriously.

He urged members of the Parents/Teachers Association to pull their resources to enhance teaching and learning in the school.
