Three hundred and seventy two (372) people perished in two hundred and ninety-nine (299) fatal accidents during the first three months of this year throughout the country.

According to statistics released by the Motor Transport Transit Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, there were 2,930 cases involving 4,343 vehicles during the same period, while 751 were described as serious and 1880 were minor and those injured were 2,226.

During the same first quarter of the year, Eastern Region recorded 86 deaths topping the list, followed by Greater Region with 59 deaths, with Ashanti Region, recording 50 deaths.

Brong Ahafo recorded 40 deaths, Volta Region, 29 deaths, Western Region, 27 Northern Region 26.

Tema recorded 25 deaths, Upper East and Upper West, 16 and 8 respectively, while Central Region had the least, with six deaths. The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of accidents that involved 2,458 vehicles with the least from Upper West Region, recording 23 accidents.

Last year, statistics indicated that 417 people were killed in 299 accidents, while the total number of accidents was 4,786, in which 2,220 people were injured.
