Mrs Vera Gaitu, Chairperson of Volta Region Public Health Nurses Group has said that lack of support by husbands for their pregnant wives and nursing mothers weakens their emotional capacities to give off their best at these times.

She held that any pregnant woman or nursing mother, already under physical and emotional stress associated natal periods could be devastated by an uncaring, unhelpful and unsympathetic spouse.

Mrs Gaitu was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) when the Group presented food items and clothing to discharged leper camps near the outskirts of the Ho township.

The nurses raised a contribution of GH¢ 1,000 (10 million cedis) to buy the items, some of which they donated to the Dr Asase Memorial Orphanage also in Ho.

Mrs Gaitu urged men to stay by their wives or partners at delivery wards to boost their morale and that they should also be able to accompany their spouses to antenatal clinics.

Mrs Gaitu said the inability of many couples to decide on whether or not to practice family planning was disappointing.

She said men's support for their wives or partners could help reduce maternal mortality in the country.

Presenting the items, Mrs Gaitu advised that people with unusual skin conditions to report to hospitals for early diagnosis and treatment.
