Reverend William Dontoh, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God-Ghana has called on politicians to let the exemplary leadership qualities of Jesus Christ guide them in their quest to lead Ghanaians.

He said Jesus Christ during his ministry, sought to serve the interest and welfare of people and not lord over them adding, "with our political dispensation the country needs 'leaders who would serve'".

Reverend Dontoh made the call in a speech read on his behalf by Reverend Moses S. Sumaila, Assistant General Superintendent of the Church at an induction service for Reverend David Wumbei Akonsi, Northern Regional Superintendent of the Church in Tamale at the weekend.

He said when politicians offered selfless and dedicated leadership, the country would enjoy peace, transparency, true democracy and progress, adding, "leaders prepared to serve do not crave for positions but service to the people".

Reverend Dontoh advised Rev. Akonsi, to always remember that God elected him to that position and therefore should remain focused and strategies to implement God's vision for the people.

"You should not be intimidated by the achievements or failures of your predecessor but have faith in God to lead and attain greater heights in the Lord's Vineyard and Assemblies of God. Accept criticisms and learn to handle them maturely to make a difference in your work," he added

Reverend Dontoh appealed to members of the Executive Committee of the Church to rally behind "the chosen servant of God to help him fulfill God's vision in his heart".

He announced that the Church's theme for 2008 was "And I will pour my spirit upon all flesh" and therefore implored the congregation to focus on prayer, revival, spiritual awakening and trust in God for the manifestation of His supernatural power.

Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, Northern Regional Minister in speech read for him said the Church had played a major role in nation building and reconciliation as well as supporting government's efforts at creating a congenial atmosphere for the citizens to utilize their potential for socio-economic development.

He pledged government's commitment to good governance with the repeal of the libel law and introduction of the whistle blowers bill to ensure meaningful development in an atmosphere without fear and suspicion.

Alhaji Idris commended the Church for its numerous interventions to complement government's efforts in the country's development.
