The immediate past President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr Amo Darko has appealed to stakeholders in education to educate parents on their responsibilities towards the education of their children.

Mr Darko, who was speaking at a stakeholders' meeting at Begoro, said parents had a vital role to play in the education of their children but expressed regret that some parents pushed their children to school under the concept of free education without providing the needed items for them.

He appealed to school management, committees and parent/teacher associations to co-operate with teachers and head teachers to instil the culture of reading in the children.

He said that lack of desire for reading had made most JSS grandaunts unable to communicate effectively.

Mr Darko noted with concern that the services of some retired teachers were not being utilized while others were misapplied at the expense of education.

He appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to re-engage physically active retired teachers.
