At least 30 percent of maternal deaths are caused by unsafe abortions in the country, Mr Kwasi Yiadom-Boakye, Programmes Director of Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) has said.

Addressing a meeting of PPAG zonal officers in Kumasi at the weekend, Mr Yiadom-Boakye appealed to the media and other organizations to intensify their education programmes to help reduce maternal deaths.

The meeting provided a forum for the participants to draw a strategic plan, including budget and programmes for next year.

He stressed that issues like emergency contraceptives, unprotected sex and family planning should be known by women to help reduce mortality, maternal deaths and morbidity.

Mrs Baaba Brew Fleischer, new national president of the association advised the youth to accord the elderly respect at all times.
