Six persons died on the spot when the GMC Ford vehicle on which they were travelling on the Walewale-Gambaga road in the Northern Region burst one of its front tyres and somersaulted several times.

The accident occurred last Friday October 12, 2007. The vehicle was said to have been speeding at the time of the accident, indicating that the driver probably lost control. The deceased persons are said to be police officers stationed at the Castle, Osu, Accra.

Seven other persons on board the vehicle sustained various degrees of injury.

They were said to be travelling to Bunkpurugu in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District to take part in the funeral of the mother of an ex-police officer whose name was given only as Musah, a former 'medical doctor' at the Police Hospital in Accra and now a Pastor at Pokuase, near Accra, when the accident occurred.

The six bodies have been deposited at the mortuary of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, while the injured persons, who were said to be in critical conditions, were immediately flown in a helicopter to the Police Hospital in Accra.

The deceased officers have been identified as DSP Alex Enaman, formerly with the Police Hospital in Accra, Rashid Mahama, Ebenezer Ofori, Kong Monika, Asiem Babah and Mibel Minyeliya.

The police in Walewale are investigating the incident but a police investigator who pleaded anonymity said the death toll could rise as the injuries to the others were very serious.
