Feasibility studies have been carried out on Kulun, Akmbalara and Jallu Rivers on the Wa-Yala- Kundungu road and the Bulenga- Choggu-Funsi road in the Wa East District for bailey bridges to be spanned on them to open up the area to people in other parts of the district.

Mr. Godfred Bayong Tongu, Minister of State at the Ministry of Roads and Transport announced this at Manwe on Friday as part of his official working visit to the region to inspect ongoing road projects.

He said because of the rivers, people in some parts of the district have to travel to Wa to take lorry and pass through Nadowli District before they could link to Funsi, the district capital to transact business.

He said the Wa-Bulenga road has been awarded on contract for tarring and work would start soon.

Mr. Tongu said a number of feeder roads would be constructed to improve the road network in the district while electricity would also be extended from Wa to the communities to enhance the economic and social activities of the people.

Currently, the district is without electricity and communication facilities.

Mr. Tongu presented a generator each out of the GH¢ 50 generators he bought from the HIPC Fund at a cost of 20,000 (200 million cedis) to the Manwe and Goripie communities for use at social gatherings and functions.

He said it was his hope to provide generators to all communities in the districts while efforts were being made to extend electricity to them.

Some communities in the district would also benefit from 69 bundles of roofing sheets purchased from the GETFUND at a cost of GH¢15,000 (150 million cedis) to help them provide decent accommodation for teachers.

The Chief of Manwe, Naa Haimdu Salia commended the government for the good policies and programmes that it initiated, which he said, were impacting positively on their lives.

He mentioned the National Health Insurance, the School Feeding Programme and Capitation Grant as some of the interventions, which were lauded by the people.

Naa Salia appealed to the government to provide health facilities, potable water and public places of convenience as well as feeders roads to enhance good health, sanitation and economic activities of the people.

At Goripie, the Imam of Goripie, Abu Mahama also appealed to the government to rehabilitate the only dam in the communities, which serve as a source of drinking water for both human beings and animal in the area.
