Mr Yaw Yiadom-Boakye, Kwaebibirem District Chief Executive, on Wednesday urged principals and staff of Youth Leadership Training institutes to inculcate in their students the spirit of self-employment after graduation.

He said that segment of the labour market remained un-accessed and yet most lucrative adding that developing countries built their economies on self-employment.

Mr Yiadom-Boakye, who was speaking at the 33rd Conference of principals of Youth Leadership Training institutes at Takrowase, advised products of those institutes to form co-operatives to be able to access credits from district assemblies to establish their own businesses.

He said the future development of the youth was all that the government was looking for and advised parents to take advantage of YLTI to enroll their wards who could not make it to the senior high schools to be provided with skills and leadership training.

Mr Yiadom-Boakye expressed worry about the tendency of some parents to ask their children of school-going age to fend for themselves and the family at a time that they were supposed to be in school and advised that those negative attitudes be stopped.

Mr P.B. Yakah, Principal, Takrowase YLTI, appealed to the government to equip the institute with modern workshops, tools and equipment to enhance effective teaching and learning.

He said although the institute had so far trained over 5,000 students since its inception, it was beset with numerous problems and there was therefore the need for support from all stakeholders to enable the National Youth Council to upgrade it to befit a Regional Youth Institute status.

Mr Yakah expressed his sincere appreciation to the district chief executive for the efforts he was making towards the development of the institute.

Papa Adjei Kyeremeh, Eastern Regional Youth Co-coordinator, suggested the review of the curriculum of YLTIs to conform to modern trends.

He appealed to district assemblies to sponsor students to the various institutes.
