A police constable who claimed he was attacked by three unidentified persons and dispossessed of an AK 47 assault rifle while on duty, has been placed in custody.

Also in custody pending further investigations into the matter are the Assembly Member for Dome, near Asante Mampong, Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, and a revenue clerk of the Sekyere East District Assembly, Twumasi Nsiah.

Constable Justice Sintim, who is stationed at Mampong, was on duty at a checkpoint at Dome with the two others on Sunday night, when the alleged attack on him took place.

The Mampong Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police(ACP) Kwame Tachie-Poku, who briefed the Daily Graphic, said the suspects were put behind bars to enable the police to establish the claim that the constable was attacked by armed robbers.

He said the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack on the policeman called for deeper investigations.

He said the constable's allegation could not be accepted on the face value and promised that all efforts would be made to trace the weapon.

ACP Tachie-Poku said initial reports as narrated by the suspects were that the Assembly member left the checkpoint for his house at about 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Around 1.55 in the early hours of Monday, the revenue clerk also left for the nearby bush to attend to the call of nature.

He said just some five minutes after the revenue clerk had left the place, the three armed men were said to have arrived at the checkpoint and attacked Constable Sintim.

Mr Tachie-Poku said a struggle was said to have ensued between the constable and the robbers but they overpowered him and took away his gun.

ACP Tachie-Poku stated that Constable Sintim had bruises on parts of the body and a cut on the left eyebrow.

According to the divisional commander, it was only the weapon that was taken away by the alleged robbers.
