Two unidentified men in vigilante style; opened fire on a military man in Alavanyo in the Volta Region, Thursday afternoon, before making their escape into the bush.
Crime Officer ASP Edward Otui said the incident happened around 1:30 pm when the victim, Lance Coporal William Bedford had gone to the bush to urinate.
He is said to be in critical condition and was rushed to the hospital in Kpando in the Volta Region before being transferred to the 37 Military hospital in Accra.
The motive for the attack is not presently clear but ASP Otui believes it may be a case of settling "personal scores".
The attack has no link at all to the sporadic conflict between the Nkonya-Alavanyo ethnic groups, he insisted.
Lance Coporal William Bedford is part of a military peace keeping mission assisting the police to restore peace in an area dogged by the ethnic conflict; which has claimed many lives.
ASP Edward Otui said they have begun investigating the case to find out why some men would go about attacking a soldier on a peace keeping mission.
Asked why the police did not chase the assailants into the bush, ASP Otui said in Alavanyo people are not chased into the bush.
It is the first time something like that has happened in the area, Otui noted.
