Thousands of residents of Cape Coast on Wednesday lined up the streets to welcome the Freedom Flame, which has been traveling from the Upper East Region since the 19th of February.

Regional Minister Nana Ato Arthur led a procession through some major towns in the region.

The flame symbolizes Ghana’s freedom from colonial rule and its travel through the regional capitals has generated public interest in the jubilee celebrations.

According to Nana Benyin Brown Addo of Radio VALCO, farmers, market women and school children holding miniature national flags poured out into the streets to meet the flame when it arrived at about 930am.

At the Nkrumah Hall of the University of Cape Coast, another flame was lighted in memory of Dr. Nkrumah in celebration of his vision in establishing the university.

The Regional Minister Nana Ato Arthur said the flame’s arrival was very significant to the region, being the very genesis of the fight for emancipation, giving birth to the UGCC and CPP (Saltpond) that gave political birth to Ghana.
