A presidential aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mohammed Musah, has said implementing the Representation of the People's Amendment Act (ROPAA) in the 2008 general elections has a tendency to destabilize the country.

Speaking in an interview with The Independent, Mr Musah called on the Electoral Commission to discard any intention of implementing the law.

The stand of the aspirant, who is widely known in political circles as Musah 94, sharply contradicts the position generally adopted by his party and other senior members.

However, Mr. Musah, a former Central Regional Youth Organiser of the NPP said the fact that the bill has been passed into law does not necessarily mean it should be implemented with immediate effect.

He pointed out that it is better time is taken to access the feasibility of its implementation since the minority parties, especially the NDC, are threatening fire and brimstone should the law be implemented.

Mr. Musah said suspending the implementation of ROPAA does not mean government is kowtowing to the demands of the opposition but rather doing so “for the sake of peace to prevail in the country as well as preserve the reputation of the NPP.”

He said people might think the NPP wants to influence the result of the upcoming election in 2008, hence the party’s desire to implement ROPAA.

“Due to the confusion associated with the law I will advise, that we wait till after 2008,” he maintained.
