The Minister of State designate for the Interior, Nana Obiri-Boahen, has said the minority NDC's concerns about his nomination are baseless.

Nana Obiri-Boahen who is also Brong Ahafo Regional chairman of the ruling NPP told Joy News the opposition party has no moral right to question his nomination because several of its officers and functionaries held both public and party offices simultaneously.

Some minority MPs including its leader, Mr Alban Bagbin and MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu have been advocating the withdrawal of Nana Obiri-Boahen's nomination.

They contend that he is hot-headed and could compromise the security of the state in the interest of his party, the NPP.

The NDC's youth group has issued a statement asking President Kufuor to withdraw his nomination. But Obiri-Boahen said he has the competence to do the job devoid of partisan parochial interests.

“When the president makes a nomination…he doesn’t do so to satisfy the whims and caprices of any political party. So all these concerns which are been raised I think they are misleading... I am principled, hardworking and level-minded.”

Nana Obiri-Boahen said his nomination does not amount to conflict of interest and mentioned that the former President J.J. Rawlings was still a founder and leader of the NDC when he assumed office.

“The late A.A. Munifie was co-chairman of the NDC but was Ghana’s ambassador to Cote d’Ivoire, Hon. E.T. Mensah at a point in time was a youth organiser of the NDC but was minister of youth and sports, Hon. Adjei Mensah once upon a time was a member of parliament, chairman of NDC and the Brong Ahafo regional minister, Hon. Kofi Attoh was a deputy minister and the same time was deputy general secretary of NDC,” he outlined.

He added: “There is no provision in the constitution of Ghana which says if you hold a position in the NPP you cannot hold any ministerial position. So wherein lies the agitation that they are making. I don’t think it has no legal, moral or social basis at all.”

Nana Obiri-Yeboah disclosed that he would consider whether or not to take up the nomination or resign from his political position when he gets the nod.
