Audio Attachment Listen to Mr. Appiah-Menkah's views on the party in this interview with Israel Laryea.
A founding member of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Apenteng Appiah-Menkah has proposed that aspirants seeking to win the nod of the party for the 2008 presidential elections should make financial contributions to the campaign chest of the party to support the eventual winner.
Mr. Appiah-Menkah told Joy FM that financing the party’s election campaign called for a lot of funding, and apart from contributing some resources to the party chest, the aspirants would also commit themselves to a united front to help fight the cause of the party.
He explained that past experiences of the party have showed that losers in such contests usually go their separate ways after the elections, a situation he said was not good enough.
Appiah-Menkah had earlier posited that each of the presidential aspirants be made to pay ¢500 million as filing fees.
But the National Executive Committee of the party settled on what it called a compromise amount; ¢250 million or GH¢25,000 after a meeting on Wednesday.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Appiah-Menkah said the settlement on the compromise figure was a reflection of the party’s internal democratic principles and was in no way a disappointment for him.
The National Executive Committee of the Party also agreed on a code of conduct that is yet to be made public. But Mr. Appiah Menkah said the aspirants must not merely commit to abide by the code verbally, they also must support it in deed and with a pledge to support the winning candidate.
The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the party, Sam Kudjoe, however disagrees with Mr. Appiah-Menkah’s call on losing aspirants to contribute ¢50 million to party funding.
He said it would be unfair to commit someone who had just lost an amount of ¢250 million to contribute some more cash.
