Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama are protesting parliament’s approval of nearly 27 million dollars for Ghana’s 50th anniversary and the presidential palace.
On Monday the house approved $11.8 million additional funding for the Ghana@50 Secretariat and $15 million for the presidential palace.
The latest approval brings to 45 million dollars the amount being spent on the presidential palace and almost 32 million dollars for Ghana@50 celebrations.
It went through Parliament despite a objections from the minority, and Messrs Smith and Mahama Ayariga believe it is a wanton waste of national resources.
Mr. Smith told Joy News their news conference was to alert government to the reality that majority of Ghanaians including some members of the ruling NPP disapproved of the government’s use of limited state resources.
He said members of the public feel cheated, especially by the brazen display of disregard for the suffering of the masses.
“Ghanaians feel being cheated, and it’s being done so blazingly and with impunity and we would determine to carry the discussion and the protest from within, from Parliament to outside parliament that there is a lot of things going on which this money could have been used properly. I mean the kind of documents we are talking about 51 million for loans and it is not money they are paying you, you have to pay back. You want to go and use that for what a presidential palace because President Kufuor wants to go and sleep in a presidential palace before he leaves office, so everything else should stop and we go and take up such huge loans? Jesus Christ I don’t think we should allow this to continue.”
