The People’s National Convention says it is in no hurry to organise a party congress.
Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. John Ndebugre says the party has a lot of work to do in reorganizing its local structures from the cells through to the constituency and national levels, and will therefore concentrate efforts towards building a stronger party.
“Our task now, the task facing the party, genuine members of the party is to reinvigorate the structures from the cells to the sub-branch, the branch to the constituency, to the regional and to the national level that will enable us have a meaningful national delegates congress which will then issue directives which will go down to the structures that have been reinvigorated which will then flow towards the elections.”
Mr. Ndebugre told Joy News that a hasty delegates’ congress will yield nothing for the party and that it was not perturbed that other parties are either holding congresses or preparing to hold same.
The acting party chairman expressed the hope that efforts at patching up differences within members of the party will yield good fruits, saying that election 2008 is quite a distant away and it would be preposterous on the part of any to conclude that the party was not prepared for election 2008.
“We contested the last election but we organised our congress in May 2004. We are in August 2007,… you don’t conduct your life according to how other persons conduct lives, so if some political parties are having 20 presidential candidates or aspirants it doesn’t mean that we too must go and have 20…”
The party’s constitution stipulates that a flagbearer shall only be elected in an election year. Mr. Ndebugre, who is also MP for Zebilla, has questioned Dr Edward Mahama for holding himself out as leader of the party.
Hearing of that case continues in court tomorrow.
Mr. Ndebugre told Joy News' Araba Koomson that rather than weaken the paty, the intra-party reconciliation talks should affect the party positively.
