The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow has described as unfortunate, statements made by Dr. Amoako Tufuor in which the latter is reported to have played up Vice President Aliu Mahama’s ethnicity in a bid to win votes.

In an interview with Joy News’ Matilda Asante on Monday November 19, 2007, Nana Ntow said it is unfortunate that Dr. Amoako Tufuor is playing the ethnic card, even though he is yet to listen to the full tape for what he is reported to have said.

Nana Ntow disagrees with Dr. Amoako Tufour on the point that the NPP is perceived as an Akan party. In his submission, he said that accusation is being mischievously leveled against the NPP by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He however said, if indeed the Vice President’s team had played up ethnicity in their campaign, then sanctions would have to be applied after due process.

The use of ethnicity in political campaigns is a violation of the party constitution.

The party’s code of conduct Point K, says that any candidate who violates the code would be disqualified.

When asked what the party would do if Aliu’s team was found to have violated the code. He said the party’s steering committee would have to listen to the tape and take the necessary action.

But according to him all these would have to be done before the party’s congress day on December 22, 2007.
