The Ghana Police Service says it will deploy about 2000 policemen to provide security at Saturday’s delegates’ congress of the New Patriotic Party.

Personnel will be armed with water canons, riot gears and will also contain some horse riders in an elaborate security planning for the gathering at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.

President Kufuor will also be in attendance to witness the process to elect a party leader to succeed him and a potential national president.

Police Director of Operations, Patrick Timbilla, told Joy News the delegates are many and so are the aspirants and the situation calls for adequate security.

He told Joy News, “There will be enough men, there will be horses, there will be water canons and all will be ready to handle any eventuality. We are bringing as many policemen as we can. We are going to pitch camp on the university right from today. We are taking over the major event area right from today until the last delegate leaves on Monday.”

An additional 200 police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Police Service are also to be deployed to help manage an anticipated heavy vehicular traffic.

From Accra’s major entry points as Ayi Mensah Ofankor, Weija, Adenta, the Tema Motorway and several such points will see policemen directing affairs to ease the anticipated congestion.
