Two political analysts have challenged Ghanaians to test the law against the election of Nana Akuffo-Addo as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, as the party’s congress failed to elect him by the constitutionally mandated 50 percent plus one valid vote cast.

Ben Ephson editor of the Dispatch newspaper and Mahama Ayariga, NDC MP for Bawku Central who were speaking on JOY FM’s news analysis programme Newsfile, said the decision required popular acclamation by delegates and not a sole concession by Mr. Alan Kyeremanten.

Mr. Ayariga asserted that the constitution of the NPP was modelled against the national constitution which established clear modalities for electing an individual and that the consent of delegates should have been considered central in the decision.

“If a constitution requires that somebody becomes flagbearer based on getting 50 percent plus one vote, the assumption is that it is only through an electoral process that you can establish that the person has chalked that requirement. It’s a critical question of who is taking the decision and I was expecting that they would go through some process of voting,” Mr Ayariga said.

Ben Ephson who argued along the same line called for a test of the law on the decision.

In what political analysts say was the hottest contest in any flagbearship race in the country, Mr. Alan Kyeremanteng, conceded defeat after polling 738 votes to place second.

But after several acclamation from party officials and colleague aspirants, the man who had the most stake in the contest after Nana Akuffo Addo conceded defeat.

In an earlier interview with JOY FM’s reporter Israel Laryea at the congress grounds, however, editor of the Statesman Gabby Ochere Darko ruled out the need for a court hearing on the issue, with a strong belief that Mr Kyeremanten had made the right decision.
