The alliance that was clutched between the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and the People’s National Convention (PNC) has hit a snag.
In a meeting by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the PNC that lasted all day Wednesday, key members of the party raised strong objection to the alliance.
There have been mixed reactions from among PNC party members over the decision of the party’s flag bearer, Dr Edward Mahama to partner Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, the presidential aspirant of the CPP.
Joy News’ correspondents at the meeting of the NEC said comments by some top officials of the party pointed to a possible overturn of Mr Mahama’s decision to take up a running mate role in a new alliance.
In an interview with Joy News, Benard Mornah, General Secretary of the PNC, said the PNC would withdraw from the alliance saying Dr Mahama sought the consent of neither the party’s executive council nor congress before taking the decision, which he described as crucial.
Mr Mornah who had been speaking from his German base where he is pursuing further studies said Dr Mahama had been elected to lead the party and not to become subordinate to a contender.
“If anybody decides to go up with a subordinate position of that nature, that will be contrary to the visions that the national congress of our party imposed on all of us,” he stated.
Referencing the party’s NEC meeting Mr Mornah said “I can be very sure with you that the position the party will take today will definitely be to tell Dr Mahama in his face that you’re flag bearer to take our party to victory; if you are not ready to do so then you may go your way.”
He said the party requires a person who could garner support to canvass victory in the December elections.
Mr Monarh said the party is not “ready to endorse illegalities,” describing the alliance as a fake one.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the PNC, Alhaji Rahmadan says an official party position will be announced on Thursday. He would not however state the details of the meeting by the party’s national executive.

Editor of the Daily Despatch, Mr Ben Ephson said it has been obvious that the alliance between the two parties would not work, considering the pockets of objections that followed the announcement.
He said it would serve the Nkrumahist fraternity better should the CPP and the PNC remain independent of each other.
Mr Epson said both parties would lose out with the PNC even more like to suffer a bigger political whack.
In the event of an overturn of the alliance, Mr Ephson said, Dr Mahama could opt for a resignation as flag bearer.
