Nduom’s Campaign Office has slammed Dr. Edward Mahama, presidential candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) for backing out of an alliance his party had with the Convention People’s Party (CPP).The campaign office had also stated that the CPP does not recognise the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Elembelle and First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Freddy Blay as its parliamentary candidate for the 2008 elections, and that the party would soon hold a primary to elect a parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
The office said the CPP National Executive Committee was investigating reports that Mr. Blay had declared his support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, and that appropriate actions would be taken after the investigations. Felix Amoah and David Ampofo, Dr. Nduom’s National Campaign and Communications Directors respectively, held a joint press conference yesterday during which they made this public, and expressed their disappointment at Dr. Mahama for backing out of the CPP/PNC alliance. They described the PNC flag bearer as a traitor and someone who could not be trusted. David Ampofo said Dr. Mahama’s behaviour was uncharacteristic of a good leader, and that the reasons he assigned for pulling out of the political alliance were trivial.
“Please if for some reasons it did not work because Dr. Mahama did not have the power to convince people, he should say that and he should not come out and say it did not work because somebody went and spoke so he can not be trusted; that is not fair.”
Mr. Ampofo explained that Dr. Mahama took an active part in all the processes that led to the alliance, after which he voluntarily posed for the cameras to take pictures of the historic event; therefore something else other than the reasons he had given might have compelled him to renege on his part of the deal. “We made a proposal to the PNC and the PNC responded to us on paper; we then met and discussed matters such as the choice of a symbol and we solved all that and agreed that at the parliamentary level, we would combine our strengths so that each of the parties would run where it is strong.
“Then it came to the presidential and we came to a conclusion that we had to vote on the issue and we agreed to form an Electoral College and all this time, Dr. Mahama was there and he was carrying on. We went for the Electoral College and voted and Dr. Nduom got the majority, shook hands and took pictures with Dr. Mahama and agreed that this was a ground-breaking and historic event. And then he said there was a breach of trust because some people ran to the media?”
He said the two parties had agreed on the contents of a joint press statement which was to have been released at 10:00 am on the morning after the alliance, therefore Dr. Nduom did no wrong in confirming the news to the media. Mr. Amoah added that Dr. Mahama probably did not mean the allegations he was reported to have made against Dr. Nduom because they could not be substantiated.
