Sai wins Nigeria Independence Golf

Godwin Sai of Achimota Golf Club returned a net score of 68 to win the First Nigerian Independence Day Open Golf Championship played at the Achimota Golf Course in Accra on Saturday.

Theophilus Govinous came second with 68 net, while Nick Smallman took the third position with 69 net, beating Paul Owusu-Baah, Philip Nukunu and Osman Camara on count-back.

In the Ladies Division, veteran Mona Captan came first with 68 net followed by Leticia Amposah-Mensah at second position with 70 net with Suzie Abaloo-Kumasah taking the third position with 72 net while Yaa Konadu Safo Debrah placed fourth with 74 net.

The One-day 18-Hole Stable-ford competition, which was opened to amateur golfers throughout the country formed part of activities marking the 47th Anniversary celebrations of Nigeria's Independence.

The competition was jointly sponsored by Inter-Continental Bank, Union Bank of Africa (UBA), Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited, Amal Bank Ghana Limited, Virgin Nigeria and Guinness Breweries Ghana Limited.

Mr Edward Boateng, Chief Executive of Global Medial Alliance said he aim of the event was to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the two countries through sports which he said is one of the principles of bringing various people together.

He expressed the hope that the event would be become an annual affair.
