After a protracted battle with the management of Asante Kotoko, the club's former prolific performer George Yamoah has succeeded in disentangling himself from the “contract” that bound him to Sylvester Asare Owusu and his management.
The long dispute over the real status of the player was settled at Jones Alhassan-Abu's Status Committee that ruled the player no longer has any contractual bond with Kotoko. Subsequently, he has been “set free” to continue his career with a team of his choice. Subsequently, Yamoah has decided to relocate to Kpando to continue his career with Heart of Lions.
But to extricate himself entirely form the "clutches" of Kotoko, Yamoah would first have to refund the 50 million cedis he allegedly took from Asante Kotoko as part of his enticement fee for his contract renewal.
Confirming the story to Africa Sports, Kofi Bawuah, manager of Yamoah said he is in total disagreement with the ruling of the Status Committee concerning the refund.
"We had to beat the registration time so did not have the luxury of time to debate the issue. But I think it's totally wrong for the Status Committee to ask Yamoah for a refund since he did not renege on the contract," Kofi Bawuah said.
But Kotoko are determined to demand their "pound of flesh".
A source close to Kotoko told Africa Sports the club finally decided to allow Yamoah to leave because he had stepped out of line with his new attitude.
“We want to engage players who are totally committed to the club and not those only interested in money," the paper quotes the source as saying.
Yamoah has signed a three-year contract with the Lions. No figures would be released by the parties involved but it is believed Yamoah received not less than 270 million cedis.
