The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 26th MTN Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) as part of its efforts to host a successful tourney.

The ceremony which came off on Monday at the LOC Secretariat seeks to position Accra as a worthy partner in the organization of the biennial event.

Dr Kofi Amoah, Chairman of the LOC Board described the partnership with the AMA as a very significant event to the January 20 – February 10, 2008 championships as the nation’s capital, Accra would be the main focus.

“All the participating teams and visitors will pass through Accra to their respective bases. Accra will also host the opening and closing ceremonies.”

Dr Amoah, who signed for the LOC explained that even though the tournament will take place in four cities, Accra rises above the other three and should be given serious attention in certain areas, especially sanitation.

The LOC Board Chairman said sanitation has been a mantra for his outfit and promised to strengthen ties with the AMA to collectively and effectively tackle the problem.

Stanley Nii Agyiri Blankson, Chief Executive Officer of AMA advised the LOC to conduct educational programmes to sensitize the citizens on improving sanitation in the capital to leave a lasting memory in the minds of the over one million visitors.

He assured that his outfit will co-operate with the LOC and the Accra Venue Organising Committee (AVOC) in their quest to make the city tidy during the three-week long event.

The Mayor signed for the Assembly.

The LOC last July sealed similar partnership with the Chief Executive Officers of Kumasi. Sekondi and Tamale Metroplis, venues of the other Group matches.
