The Madina Divisional Police Command has recorded 142 accidents from July 2006 to date.Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Commander of the Accra-North Police Headquarters, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr James Owusu Mensah said from July to September 2006, 76 accidents cases were recorded, while 10 persons were killed with 56 persons receiving various degrees of injuries involving 70 vehicles.He added that during the third quarter of 2007, 66 accidents were also recorded with six deaths, 40 people received serious injuries involving 72 vehicles.According to Mr. Owusu Mensah, the Madina Divisional Command had arrested 175 drivers involving vehicular offences and out of that number, 133 were convicted while 20 of the drivers were cautioned and discharged.Fifteen drivers were given warning letters and seven were jailed. He added that 73,300,000 cedis were collected as fines from drivers at court during the period.During a recent operation by the Divisional Command, 60 motorbikes were arrested. A number of them were able to produce the necessary documents on their bikes and they were released.Twenty of the motorbike owners were put before court and 10 of the owners were convicted. Seven motorbike owners were cautioned and discharged while three cases were still under investigation.He warned motorbike sellers to make sure that they register all their motorbikes before selling them out to interested persons since unregistered bikes would not be spared on the road.With the impending Christmas holidays, the Divisional MTTU Commander Mr Owusu Mensah has cautioned all drivers to be careful they do not get drunk while driving since the police would be on the road with their alcohol meter to check drunken drivers and warned drivers not to be under the influence of alcohol during the Christmas holidays.The Madina MTTU Commander added that drivers who like speeding during Christmas holidays would be dealt with severely when they are found culpable.ASP. Mr Owusu Mensah has warned pedestrians who cross the roads when the red lights are shone to refrain from this act since this had been creating unnecessary jams and sometimes resulting in fatal accidents involving pedestrians.He called on the Urban Roads Department to repaint the Zebra Crossing sings within his jurisdiction since most of them are faded.On road signs education, he said he has drawn a plan to visit most of the schools in the area and educate the pupils/students on how to use the road.Source: GNA
