Fifteen passengers, including three children, perished in two separate accidents at Buoho, near Kumasi, and the Amanfoso Junction on the Sunyani-Berekum road last Saturday. In the Buoho accident, 10 people were killed when the 207 Mercedes Benz bus on which they were travelling collided head-on with a Benz cargo truck at Buoho on the Kumasi-Offinso road. Eight of them died on the spot, while two others died on Sunday at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where 13 passengers are on admission. The identities of the deceased are yet to be established. In the accident on the Sunyani-Berekum road, five people, including the driver of an Opel Vectra taxi cab and a four-year-old girl, died on the spot when the taxi on which they were travelling from Berekum to Sunyani collided with a Mercedes Benz saloon car at the Amanfoso Junction at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Briefing the Daily Graphic on the accident, Inspector Bismarck Yeboah,of the Kodie police station said the bodies of the deceased in the Buoho accident had been deposited at the St Patrick Hospital at Maase for autopsy. He said the 207 Benz bus, with registration number AS 37.74 Z, was travelling from Kyekyewere, near Tetrem in the-Ashanti Region towards Kumasi, while the truck, with registration number AS 326 C and loaded with assorted goods, was travelling from Kumasi to Tamale when they collided head-on at the outskirts of Buoho. According to Inspector Yeboah, initial Police investigations revealed that the driver of the truck was dozing, a situation that caused his vehicle to veer onto the lane of the 207 Benz bus, which was full of passengers, crushing the bus in the process and causing the death of its driver and some of the passengers. He said the Police could have saved some of the victims who died on the spot if the Police had secured vehicles to transport the victims to the hospital as soon as the accident occurred. He pointed out that notwithstanding the fact that the Kumasi-Techiman road was accident prone; the Police along the road lacked the requisite logistics to support accident victims, a situation which worsened the plight of victims. Inspector Yeboah, therefore, appealed to all stakeholders to support the Police in that field to enable them to provide the needed assistance for accident victims when the need arose. Briefing the Daily Graphic on the accident which occurred on the Sunyani-Berekum road, the Berekum Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Appiah, said those who sustained minor injuries were rushed to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital. According to him, a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus with about 50 passengers on board and heading towards Sunyani from Berekum had parked on the road, compelling the Benz saloon car which was travelling from Berekum to Sunyani to veer off into the other lane, leading to the collision with the oncoming taxi.
