In the past decade and beyond, there have been many academics, politicians and ordinary folk, who have called for Ghana's 1992 Constitution to be given a second look.
Some have focused on its relevance, considering our national status quo, while others have touched on how it supposedly served the purpose of the erstwhile Provisional National Defence Council.
In January 2010, during the tenure of former President, John Evans Atta-Mills, The Constitution Review Commission, a Presidential Commission of Enquiry, was set up to consult with the people of Ghana on the operation of the 1992 Constitution and on any changes that needed to be made to the Constitution. Unfortunately, many of the recommendations of the Commission were not applied.
But according to Dr Assibi Abudu, a Former Bank of Ghana Chief Economist who spoke Monday on the AM Show, the 1992 Constitution is no longer fit for purpose and ought to be changed.
"I don't know where this constitution gets its inspiration from. Sincerely. And is it working well for us?" When asked whether the 1992 Constitution should be replaced, he answered with a forceful "O, yes!" and added:
"In fact,.. our population doubles every 25 years. And my feeling is that the Constitution, whenever we get a new one, should include in the provisions that every 25 years we [should] have a new Constitution because if you have to have a democracy, you cannot tie people, Ghanaians of the future, to obey what Ghanaians of today do - because the future will be a different situation altogether.
So how can the people of today predict what will happen? They are not omniscient to predict what will happen 20, 30 or 40 years from now."
