A staunch member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Ben Ephson has said that even with the new crop of national executives under the chairmanship of Samia Yaba Nkrumah, the CPP cannot win the 2012 general elections.
Speaking to Asempa FM on the chances of the CPP after it's national delegates' congress over the weekend, pollster Ben Ephson, who is also the Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper hinted that what the CPP can do now is to go into negotiations with the two main political parties - the NDC and the NPP - to lobby for help towards securing more parliamentary seats in the 2012 elections.
Mr. Ephson believes next year’s elections will be between the NPP and the ruling NDC. He is therefore urging the CPP to concentrate on re-organizing itself for the 2016 elections.
Mr. Ephson was however optimistic of an improved turnabout for the CPP under the new National executives.
The National delegates’ congress of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) held at the Ghana International Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Saturday saw Samia, daughter of Ghana’s first president Dr Kwame Nkrumah, being declared winner in the chairmanship position, making history as the first woman to occupy such a position in the history of the party and Ghana in general.
She polled 1,151 votes to beat three other contestants, including the incumbent chairman, Ladi Nylander who could only manage 353 votes. An ex-chairman, Prof. Edmund Delle had 332 votes with Madam Bentsi-Enchill polling only 10 votes.
Mr Kobina Ivor Greenstreet retained his position as the party's General Secretary. Susan Adu Amankwah, Rodaline Ayana, and Oteng Anane were respectively elected as the first, second and third vice chairpersons.
Mr Kosi Dede was dethroned by Seth Gomnah for the National Treasurer position. Mr Abu Forgor won the National Organiser slot.
The CPP has seen a lot of its membership splinter off, leaving it weakened while efforts at uniting it have not seen much success. Ben Ephson said he would be very surprised if the CPP clinches power in the 2012 elections, acknowledging though that anything is possible.
