Choral groups across Ghana have been participating in a National Composers Competition to promote a peaceful election.

Under the theme “Avoiding Hate Speech Towards a Peaceful Election”, the concert involved each group composing and performing songs that centred on peace.

A Deputy Director at the Ghana Tourism Authority, Abena Amo, highlighted the importance of music as a tool to foster unity and promote tourism.

"Music and drama are all part of tourism and can be harnessed to protect our culture. We call on Ghanaians to vote in peace," she admonished.

The event was hosted by the Kumasi Evangel Choir-Ghana, in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Royal Image Group. It was under the auspices of the Asante Cultural and Traditional Institute and Queen Mothers Foundation Ghana.

Chairman of the Queen Mothers Foundation, Nana Ama Serwaa, cautioned the youth against misinformation, violence, and election-related malpractices.

"Many say things they have no idea about and keep on propagating it. We should desist from such acts to help maintain our peace. Moreover, don't allow politicians to use you to lose your life or be maimed. They will never care for you when such a time comes.

“Go vote in peace and don't intentionally spoil the ballot, but vote for the candidate you think will help propel progress for the nation. I have no passport to flee when the opposite happens. Let's protect our peace at all costs," she pleaded.

Chief Executive of Royal Image Group, Dr Amankwaah Agyemang, spoke of the need to organise such programmes to ease the tension that often mounts in electioneering processes.

The Eastern Harmonious Choir from Koforidua won the competition. The group received a cash prize of GH₵15,000 and will be accorded an ambassadorial status.

Awards were given to all the participating chorale groups and individual composers.

Some participants shared their joy for the platform given and called on the Ghanaian youth to do away with deviant behaviours and make use of their talents.
