Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong, a 70-year-old farmer from the Sekyere Central district in the Ashanti Region, has been honoured as the National Best Farmer.
With a farming career spanning over 50 years, Nana Owusu has built an impressive legacy, owning North American Farms, which employs 168 workers. The farm cultivates a wide range of crops, including cocoa and cashew, contributing significantly to the agricultural sector.
As part of his award, Nana Owusu received one million Ghana cedis in recognition of his outstanding achievements in farming and his contribution to the country's economy.
His hard work and dedication to sustainable farming practices have set an example for others in the sector.
In his acceptance speech during the Farmers Day celebration on November 8, Nana Owusu called for greater attention to be given to food security.
He emphasised the importance of investing in local agriculture to ensure the country can meet its food production needs and reduce reliance on imports. He urged both the government and private sector to collaborate in creating a more resilient agricultural system.
The Farmers Day celebration, held simultaneously across the country, served to recognise the vital role farmers play in driving Ghana's economic growth.
It highlighted their commitment to providing food and raw materials for various industries, despite challenges such as climate change and limited resources.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, along with other dignitaries, attended the event to celebrate the achievements of farmers.
