The High Court in Accra has granted bail to Bright Alan Debrah Fosu, one of the seven persons convicted in the 2021 attempted coup plot, pending the determination of his appeal.
Fosu and five others were convicted of high treason and sentenced to death by hanging on January 24, 2024.
On Monday, November 10, 2026, a three-member panel of the High Court admitted Fosu to bail in the sum of GHC 2.5 million, to be justified with landed property.
The panel comprised Justices Eugene Nyadu Nyante, Ruby Ayitey, and Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie of the General Jurisdiction Division.
He has since filed an appeal, arguing that the judgment against him was in breach of common law and statute, and that his conviction was “prima facie wrong” with his appeal having “obvious prospects of success.”
As part of the bail conditions, the court ordered that Fosu surrender his passport, his name be placed on the Stop List, and he may not travel without the court’s permission.
The court warned that any breach of the conditions would lead to the revocation of the bail.
Defence lawyers are expected to ensure that the court records of appeal are transmitted to the Supreme Court for the appeal process to proceed.
Fosu was among seven persons convicted for conspiracy to commit high treason and high treason in connection with a plot to overthrow the government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Other serving convicts include Donya Kafui (alias Ezor), Yohanes Zikpi, WO2 Esther Saan Dekuwine, and L/Cpl Ali Solomon.
Those acquitted and discharged in the case included Dr Frederick Mac-Palm (now deceased), Col. Samuel K. Gameli, and ACP Dr Benjamin K. Agordzo.
